Apothecary
From RIFT Wiki - RIFT IncGamers
What is Apothecary?
Apothecary is the ability to turn herbs and other materials into potions, vials, philters and serums which can augment any characters' abilities or replenish health, mana and energy reserves. Some are needed in order to complete certain quests and others are required reagents for other professions (a money making opportunity).
It's best paired with Foraging.
How do I become an Apothecary?
You can train to four levels of proficiency and each has certain prerequisites that you need to meet before you are able to progress to the next rank of proficiency. The table below details the specific requirements for training to each rank within Apothecary.
| Level | Skill Level Required | Cost to Learn |
|---|---|---|
| Novice | 0 | 10 Silver |
| Skilled | 75 | 50 Silver |
| Expert | 150 | 2 Gold. 50 Silver |
| Master | 225 | 12 Gold. 50 Silver |
Below is a list of locations with links to maps which pinpoint exactly where the Trainer can be found. Coordinates are in parentheses which you can find in game via the map (press m) mousing over the terrain with your cursor.

Do I need any special equipment?
When you train as a Novice Apothecary the icon on the left will appear in your action bar. Clicking this will open up your recipe list and this is where all recipes you learn from now on can be found. You will need to locate a laboratory and be next to it in order to create concoctions. These are located next to Apothecary trainers.
How do I learn recipes?
You can buy them from an Apothecary Trainer (as listed above) who, for a fee, will train you in recipes up to his own level of expertise. A Novice Apothecary Trainer can not train in you in the same recipes as a Master for example.
You can also purchase some recipes from Recipe Vendors (as listed above) with Artisan Marks, Planarite and Apothecary Plaques that are earned doing daily profession quests.
How do I get the supplies I need?
- You will be best to use the Foraging gathering skill which you can train in also. This will allow you to find plants for yourself in the wilderness and gather them. Check this link for a list of all the plants and where to find them.
- Other components can be bought from an Apothecary Supplier.
- You can also trade with other players for ingredients.
There isn't anything Apothecaries need that are exclusively obtained from another crafting professions.
What things can I create with Apothecary?
There's a huge array of different types of 'pots' that you can make. Below is a table detailing the different types.

How do I make potions?
You will need the ingredients that you gather via Foraging and supplies such as bottles, flasks and other reagents from a vendor. All recipes require you to be next to a Laboratory. These can be found in cities and other settlements and will be located next to an Apothecary trainer.
How do I level up Apothecary?
By crafting potions. All recipes have skill levels requirements to perform and depending on your skill level in Apothecary you will gain levels crafting the recipe. Check the image on the right to give you an example of how your recipe interface will look. Below is a table showing what each colour means.
| Colour | % Chance to level up |
|---|---|
| orange | 100% |
| yellow | 70% |
| green | 30% |
| Grey | 0% |
The maximum level in Apothecary is 300.
Levelling Route
This is the route I took to level up my Apothecary. I have used the easiest root which was partly determined by where I was playing at the time and the plants available. I tried not to use recipes that required obscure (and therefore expensive at the auction house) reagents such as Bloody Fangs and Pristine Femur. I could have of course tapped my guildmates for reagents or money to buy them at the auction house but that doesn't make a very useful guide.
If you want a list of all the potions to make up your own mind here is a comprehensive list of potions that lists, skill level and reagents needed all on one page.
NOTE: Some recipes may not be the most efficient option but as they form part of your Workorders (daily quests to earn Artisan Marks) I chose to make them. A list of the Apothecary#Apothecary Workorders is below.
Jump to the Shopping List at the bottom in order to see what plants you will need and that way you can keep an eye out for them at the auction house and snap up any bargains ahead of time.
Level 1 - 20
Lesser Mana Potion1 x Grieveblossom Petals x 19
Recipe turns from yellow at skill level 10
Therefore, it could be quicker or slower than listed here. It turns green at skill level 20 so success rate is even slower and it may be more cost effective to move onto Minor Explosive Philter which you can buy at that point and that will be orange so successful each time you craft.
You can do Lesser Healing Potion too if you wish to stock up on health but they take 2 Coastal Glorys per go so a little more costly. However, they form part of the Apothecary daily quest routine (Workorder) which require you to make 3 a day in exchange for Artisan's Marks.
Level 21 - 40
Minor Explosive Philter1 x Creeperbrush Roots x 22
Recipe turns yellow at 30
You can train Minor Venom Philter at this point but that requires 2 Rotting Canine. If you do not have the money to buy these at the Auction House or time and patience to grind for them you can stick with the Philter to get you to slvl 40 at which point the recipe turns green.
Level 41 - 60
Minor Healing Potion OR Minor Mana Potion2 x Creeperbrush Roots OR 2 x Grieveblossom Petals x 27
Both recipes level at the same rate, turning yellow 50 and green at 60.
The Mana Potion uses Grieveblossom which is more abundant in the starting areas than Creeperbrush so it's more efficient to go for those rather than the Healing Potion. Don't bother learning the new recipes when you hit 50, they require more resources.
Level 61 - 80
Warding Potion2 x Grieveblossom Petals x 24
This turns yellow at 70
Stick with it until 80 because the recipes in between require Cracked Ribs too.
Don't forget to train at level 75!
Level 81 - 100
Healing Tonic2 x Coastal Glory x 25
Turns yellow at 90
This recipe also forms the second Workorder you get (Craft 4 Healing Tonics) so you can earn some Artisan's Marks along the way.
Level 101 - 110
Healing Potion OR Mana Potion2 x Razorbrush Leaves OR 2 x Duskglory Petals x 10
They bother turn yellow at 110
At this point you have the choice of two depending on which zone you're in and what you're foraging for or what's selling the cheapest in the Auction House. I went for Mana potion.
Level 111 - 120
Basic Intelligence Serum OR Basic Strength Serum x 104 x Golden Nettle Stems OR 2 x Golden Nettle Stems and 1 x Wyvernspurr Stems
Both turn yellow at 120
It's a toss up between these two now. Golden Nettles are level 80 so easier to come by than Wyvernspurr which are level 115 Foraging but you require twice as much for the Intelligence potion as for the Strength. Making either or a mix of both of these will see you to Apothecary level 120. Both potions are required for Workorder quests too. Workorder: Basic Intelligence Serum and Workorder: Basic Strength Serum so keep some of those to one side.
Level 121 - 140
Basic Wisdom Serum x 251 x Wyvernspurr Stems
Turns yellow at 130
I had to buy 1 platinum's worth of Wyvernspurr Stems to supplement what I was foraging myself unfortunately and it took 25 crafts to raise 20 levels. That left some over for the next stage however.
Level 141 - 150
Basic Healing Tonic x 102 x Wyvernspurr Stems
Turns yellow 1t 150
Getting to 140 meant I was able to learn Basic Healing Tonic whose ingredients are a lot easier to get hold of.
Don't forget to train at level 150!
Level 151 - 160
Basic Healing Potion OR Basic Explosive Philter x 101 x Roc Orchid Petals OR 2 x Tattertwist Leaves
Turn yellow at 160
I found Tatterwist Leaves more easily than Roc Orchid and also I had the Workorder: Basic Healing Potions (Defiant) or (Guardian) which required 6 which is only two crafts because each craft creates 3 potions but still, it's a daily quest so it's worth doing Basic Healing Potion up to skill level 160 and earning the Artisan Marks for your trouble.
Level 161 - 170
Basic Philter of Restoration and Basic Philter of Vigor x 102 x Tattertwist Leaves OR 2 x Wyvernspurr Stems
Both turn yellow 1t 170
You probably have 5 orange trainer recipes by now but the two least expensive are Basic Philter of Restoration and Basic Philter of Vigor.
At this point you will have a decent amount of Artisan Marks to buy recipes from vendors but these require more obscure reagents too. So if it's about simply levelling up Apothecary these are your two best bets. Wyvernspurr Stems is available to harvest 30 levels before Tattertwist Leaves so if that's a factor still then your choice is easy. I had managed to pick up some cheap Tattertwist but had only collected 13 Wyvernspurr Stems from Scarwood Reach.
A lot of Tattertwist is needed in the next stage so I used up most of my Wyvernspurr on 5 Philters of Vigor first and crafted 5 Philters of Restoration to take me to skill level 170 when both recipes turned yellow.
Level 171 - 180
Greater Intelligence Serum x 104 x Tattertwist Leaves
Turns yellow at 180
Although Greater Strength Serum requires half the amount of Tattertwist Leaves as Greater Intelligence Serum, it also requires Drakefoot Stems which is a bit of a pain in the rear to find. If you're having to supplement your supply by using the Auction House you will pick Tattertwist up for less than Drakefoot.
Level 181 - 190
Greater Warding Potion x 102 x Bloodshade Petals
Turns yellow at 190
Of the three orange recipes available now Drakefoot Stems were needed in two and as they are harder to come by than the Bloodshade and more expensive at the auction house I went for Greater Warding Potion. If you do have Drakefoot however Greater Wisdom Serum is the best as it only requires 1 piece each.
Level 191 - 200
Greater Healing Tonic x 102 x Drakefoot Stems
Turns yellow at 200
At this point it steps up a gear because the recipes available all require rarer reagents. Dark Sky Blue Dye needs Bloody Fangs, Greater Agility Serum requires Pure Distillate, Greater Endurance Serum and Greater Fortification Serum both require Pristine Femur and most also require Drakefoot Stems. However, Greater Healing Tonic requires just the Drakefoot Stems. As they are also required for a Workorder this is the best potion to make for this level. Greater Endurance Serum is also required for a Workorder but because I didn't have any Pristine Femurs I couldn't make them.
Level 201 - 210
Greater Philter of Restoration OR Greater Philter of Vigor OR Greater Healing Potion OR Greater Mana Potion
2 x Basiliskweed Stems, 2 x Drakefoot Stems OR 2 x Bloodshade Petals for both healing and mana potions.
All turn yellow at 210
None of the next available recipes are needed for Workorders so it really comes down to which ingredients you have. As the next stage requires Bloodshade Petals I decided to save those so that left the other two (Greater Philter of Restoration and Greater Philter of Vigor) and I was able to do 5 of each which took me to 210.
Don't forget to train at level 225!
Level 211 - 230
Greater Explosive Philter x 221 x Bloodshade Petals
Turns yellow at 220
This is by far the easiest recipe to learn at this stage. It needs a single unit of Bloodshade and High Grade Sulfur which is cheap at the Apothecary Trainer. Other recipes at this level require Bloody Fangs, Distillates and bones. I did this one until I was skill level 230 because the alternative was to do Bottles of Critical Strikes or Spellstrikes both of which require Pristine Distillate. If you're short on Bloodshade Petals they are cheaper to buy at the auction house than Pristine Distillate, if you don't have that recipe yet, which I did not at this stage.
Level 231 - 240
Mighty Strength Serum x 102 x Drakefoot Stems and 1 x Basiliskweed Stems
Turns yellow at 240
I could have gone for Mighty Intelligence Serum but that required 4 Drakefoot Stems each go and they were more expensive at the auction house than Basiliskweed and as I didn't have enough materials I had to resort to paying for them. Mighty Strength Serum are also part of a Workorder. I bought up quite a bit of Basiliskweed as it's also needed for the next 20 levels.
Level 241 - 250
Mighty Wisdom Serum x 101 x Basiliskweed Stems
Turns yellow at 250
This is the cheapest as far as plants are concerned. You could go for Mighty Dexterity Serum which requires 2 x Basiliskweed per time if a Dexterity is much more useful to you. It didn't matter to me as both the potions required level 40 to use and I was too low and going to sell the potions so I took the cheapest option.
Level 251 - 260
Mighty Healing Potion x 102 x Basiliskweed Stems
Turns yellow at 260
Pretty straight forward here. Again, it's the cheapest as far as plant material is concerned.
Level 261 - 270
Mighty Philter of Vigor x 102 x Basiliskweed Stems
Turns yellow at 270
Pretty straight forward here. Again, it's the cheapest as far as plant material is concerned.
Level 271 - 280
Mighty Explosive Philter x 102 x Tempestflower Stems
Turns yellow at 280
Pretty straight forward here. Again, it's the cheapest as far as plant material is concerned.
Level 281 - 290
Heroic Healing Tonic x 102 x Twilight Bloom Roots
Turns yellow at 290
Apothecary gets quite greedy from here on. Needing all sorts of obscure ingredients that are of course very expensive at the auction house. It was a bonus that the cheapest recipe was also a healing based one which you're always going to need to keep a pile off in your bag.
Level 291 - 300
Heroic Mana Tonic x 101 x Twilight Bloom Roots
Turns yellow at 300
Surprisingly there is still a relatively cheap recipe to take you to the max level and even though I don't use mana myself I made these and gave them away to guildies.
And that's it. You have reached the pinnacle. No potion is too complex for you to handle, no elixir too tricky to concoct. Shower your guildmates which gifts or make a fortune at the auction house.
Shopping List
Here's the list of reagents I used so if you want to make it really easy for yourself just buy or beg for the following list then follow the above and bish, bash, bosh, you're done.
- Grieveblossom Petals x 121
- Creeperbrush Roots x 22
- Coastal Glory x 50
- Duskglory Petals x 20
- Golden Nettle Stems x 20
- Wyvernspurr Stems x 65
- Roc Orchid Petals x 10
- Tattertwist Leaves x 50
- Bloodshade Petals x 44
- Drakefoot Stems x 50
- Basiliskweed Stems x 70
- Tempestflower Stems x 20
- Twilight Bloom Roots x 30
Tips
- Keep an eye on the Auction House and plan ahead. Sometimes you will find a bargain. At one point I noticed two batches of 50 Tattertwist up for 1p each (2g each unit) and even I didn't need them yet I snapped them up for later. More often than not they were on at upwards of 10g a unit, so it was well worth planning ahead.
- Another thing with the auction House. I was scouring the Auction House for bargains and I noticed someone selling single units of Wyvernspurr Stems for 75g each and I knew I would need some later on but would never be able to afford that so I snuck into Scarwood Reach a few levels before I should and camped a few nodes (dying a few times along the way of course). Got 20 pieces and put them on the Auction House 5 single pieces at a time over 4 days at 10 gold a unit. The average price then went down to around 16 gold a unit for as long as I was keeping an eye on the Auction House.
- Harvest nodes you don't need. There is a theory that there is a node limit in each area. If you're waiting for a certain node to spawn make sure nearby ones are harvested or it could be those that are stopping yours from spawning. It's a theory and has never been confirmed by TRION but if you're desperate to get the plant and move on you'll do anything right, even do the /chicken if they asked you.

Can I unlearn Apothecary?
Yes. Any profession trainer can perform 'Unlearn'. Select 'I'd like to unlearn a skill...' from the trainer's menu and then the profession you would like to unlearn.
To recap on the Apothecary basics:
- It's a crafting profession.
- Will count as one of your three profession limit.
- Requires a laboratory in order to concoct.
- Works best coupled with the gathering profession Foraging.
- Can do daily quests in order to be rewarded with Artisan Marks and supplies.
- Potions are not Bind on Pickup (BoP) and therefore can be given away or auctioned.
- Can not runebreak any pots.
- Potions that affect party/raid members will not do so if they already have a buff of the same type active.
