What is Foraging?

foraging.jpg
Foraging is a gathering skill that enables you to gather plants and wood to use with professions. The primary profession it's useful with is Apothecary but it's also good support if you are trained in Artificing or Weaponsmithing.

How do I become a Forager?

You can train to four levels of proficiency and each has certain prerequisites that you must meet before you are able to progress to the next rank of proficiency. The table below details the specific requirements for training to each rank within Foraging.

Level Skill Level Required Create Items to level Cost to Learn
Novice 0 10 Silver
Skilled 75 50 Silver
Expert 150 2 Gold. 50 Silver
Master 225 12 Gold. 50 Silver

Below is a list of locations with links to maps which pinpoint exactly where the Trainer can be found. Coordinates are in parentheses which you can find in game via the map (press m) mousing over the terrain with your cursor.

When you train as a Novice Forager three icons will appear in your Abilities book, (located bottom left of your screen). The icons are Track Plants, Track Wood and Foraging.

The first two are straight forward and once activated will indicate on your mini map when a plant or piece of wood is nearby (as seen on the right). Mouse over the small diamond on the mini map and the name of the plant/wood will display saving you time running to items you do not wish to gather. These trackers do not have timers so they don't require reactivating. Both trackers can be active at the same time.

When a plant or stack of wood is located simply click on it when you are close enough and your character will gather it. Plants and wood have Foraging level requirements to gather them and if you are not a high enough level the text will be in red.

The last icon, Foraging, gives you access to the recipes you have learned that enable you to turn your wood into lumber and logs. Plants foraged are used primarily in Apothecary or you can sell them via the Auction house. Wood is useful with Artificing and Weaponsmithing.

You will need to locate a workbench and be next to it in order to craft your wood and these can most often been found next to a Foraging trainer. No other equipment or supplies are needed.

Where do I Forage for each plant and wood?

Below are maps of each zone showing precise locations of resources (work in progress).

What things can I Forage for?

Each time you Forage you will receive 1 to 3 pieces of the plant or wood. Each item requires you to be a certain level in Foraging before you can gather it. That is Slvl in the table below.

There is also a chance of finding other items when you Forage. For example you could find Potent Sap, which when clicked will begin a quest.

How do I learn Foraging recipes?

You can buy them from a Foraging Trainer who, for a fee, will train you in recipes up to his own level of expertise. A Novice Foraging Trainer can not train in you in the same recipes as a Master for example.

How do I craft with things I have gathered?

Plants on their own are of no use and you will need to train in Apothecary to utilise then. A Forager can craft wood into lumber and logs which can then be used in Artificing or Weaponsmithing. Locate a workbench to craft wood.

What things can I craft with Foraging?

All these items can be crafted by the Forager but need to be used with other professions beyond that or simply sold.

How do I level up Foraging?

By gathering plants and wood and by crafting wood. If you intend to learn Foraging learn it as easily as possible as the lower level plants and wood are located in the lower level areas of Telara.

Can I unlearn Foraging?

Yes. Any profession trainer can perform 'Unlearn'. Select 'I'd like to unlearn a skill...' from the trainer's menu and then the profession you would like to unlearn.

To recap on the Foraging basics:

  • A gathering profession to support Apothecary, Artificing and Weaponsmithing.
  • Will count as one of your three profession limit.
  • Requires no bought equipment, just a workbench to craft your wood.
  • Track Plants and Track Wood are not on a timers.
  • Can have Track Plants and Track Wood active at the same time.
  • Stacks of wood and plants stack to 50 of a single type.

Patch changes to Foraging

Version 1.01 - 11 March 2011

  • Crafting Quest: Pure Distillate: Defiants can now complete the second step. Craft on, McCrafty!
  • Recipes purchased from Planar faction merchants can no longer be resold for silver.
  • Removed a Kingswood Log node from Shimmersand that would respawn repeatedly.
  • Fixed rare cases where you could be double-charged when learning a new recipe from a trainer.
